Description

The Pennant Carp (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) has many names such as: thread algae eater, bat fish, bat loach, steep-finned carp, or juniper loach. Chinese Sucker, Chinese High Fin Banded Shark, Sailfin Sucker, Topsail Sucker, Asian Sucker Fish, Chinese Sucker Fish or Wimple Carp.
The Pennant Carp s a freshwater fish species native to China from the family of the suction carp (Catostomidae).
This carp species is a maximum of approx. 60 cm long, the average size is approx. 40 cm.
In 2007 a dark red colored pennant carp weighing 35 kg and 135 cm in length was caught from the Jialing Jiang, a tributary of the Yangtze River. The fish, protected by the Chinese government, was measured, weighed and released.

Way of Life/Habitat

The pennant carp is native to the Yangtze River basin in China. Pennant carp are sensitive to high nitrate levels in the water and are therefore dependent on clean water.
The ideal water temperature for him is 24 ° C and the pH should be 6.0 to 7.0. Pennant carp also tolerate much lower temperatures and can occasionally survive below 0 ° C in European garden ponds.

Pennant carp live mostly in open water or near the bottom. These fish appear in groups or smaller shoals of their own kind or in company with Rasbora, Danio or Siamese weevil.
